Stan Brakhage ( 1933- 2003 ) cinéaste américain, l'un des plus influents dans la periode d'aprés guerre à New York avec Jonas Mekas et Maya Deren. Il est un des premiers collaborateurs du New American Cinema (1). Il fonde la Coopérative de New York (2) avec Jonas Mekas. Mais il démisionne vers le milieu des années 60 et quitte New York à cause de profond désaccords avec le milieu artistique new yorkais, il dira "Nous avons eu des différents sur les rapports de la culture et de l'art. J'avais peur que les préoccupations sociales des années 60 submergent les positions esthétiques à longue portée." Il gardera cependant contact avec Mekas et des projections de ces films ont été organisées tout au long de sa carrière. C'est un solitaire, il se retira dans les montagnes du Colorado. Cinéaste expérimental, Brakhage a une vision romantique du créateur et du rôle de l'artiste. Il représente l'artiste bohème du dix-neuvième siècle, il parle dans ses films de l'aliénation humaine, en même temps, il se pose en tant que réalisateur, en figure démiurgique. Il cherche toujours une manière de filmer quasiment primitive, une des citations les plus connues qui résume bien son art "Imaginez une œil qui n'est pas gouverné par les lois artificielles de la perspective, mais doit reconnaitre chaque objet dans la vie au travers d'une aventure de perception.", metaphor on vison. Adepte du film abstrait directement peint sur pellicule, il fait dans "Anticipation of the Night" une éloge du mouvement de caméra. Le son, pour lui, n'est pas évident dans un film et il ne la utilisé qu'à de rare occasion. Stan Brakhage est mort le 9 mars 2003 en laissant derrière lui une filmographie impressionnante (3). A son chevet, il avait demandé une caméra super16 chargé prêt a tourner.
